Handwarmer Project
Evidence of work:
Task:
For this project, we had create an environmentally friendly and safe to use hand warmer to be sold at the student store and school sporting events.
Content:
Our hand warmer was similar to other but unique in its own way. It consist of 1 small and thin water-balloon, half a paper clip, calcium chloride, 1 big and thicker water-balloon and some good water. At first we had a lot of random ideas but of course, near the end of the project, we come up with this one. First, you take one of the small balloon and put in a half paperclip and fill it up 10g of calcium chloride. Then, someone should blow a little air into the small balloon so it triples its size and tie it up. The next step was to stick the small balloon into the lager one. Once it was inside, we filled the larger balloon with water and tied it off. The hand warmer was complete. To allow it to function, you have to use your hands to move around the paperclip until it punctures a hole in the small balloon. After, the water and the calcium chloride will mix together and a significant heat increase of 9 degrees. When you are using the hand warmer, use caution and handle with care so the bigger balloon doesn't pop from the paperclip. We did three to four experiment with our product and it worked ever time. To advertise our product, we would have them announced over the speaker during small breaks in the game. We would also print some simple and small posters to hang around campus (especially for the debut of our product being sold).
Reflection:
Overall, I thought that this was a successful project. My group and I worked well together but we had our moments where we wanted to accomplish nothing. We got over our problems together the best way possible. Like, most of the time we all had to come together and share all our ideas to figure out our next step would be. It was tough getting all of us to focus on the project instead of just doing our homework or scamper off somewhere else. We did a good job preparing but had some trouble pursuing what we wanted. You just have to keep trying new things that could possibly work, which was a big theme of this project. One peak for me was patience and self-control. I sometimes got a little impatient either because we were so off task or just behind other groups. I even remember taking a moment to replenish myself and slowly getting the group back towards our goal. Another peak for me was just coming up with new ideas throughout the project. I would just begin by using different chemicals and safely mixing them to see which had the best results. One pit for me was mainly, staying on task. I liked to always wonder around and see what other groups were doing and always talk to people around me. I could get off track really easily and that is one pit that I need to get better on. Another pit that I encountered was time management. We were going really slow in the beginning and of course in the end, we were rushing left and right to get some things done. For the last three or four workdays, we either had one or two people of our group present. We did not account for this and it definitely had an affect in our overall project.
